Yaron Tsur, Ph.D.

Background: Yaron Tsur is an associate professor in the Department of Jewish History at Tel Aviv University. He specializes in the history of the Jewish communities of the Islamic world, particularly North Africa, and the ethnic problem in Israel. He took part in establishing the Open University of Israel in 1975. At Tel Aviv University, he has served as chair of Jewish History (2007) and as head of the School of Jewish Studies (2008-2010). Among his books are A Torn Community: The Jews of Morocco and Nationalism, 1943-1954 (Am Oved, 2001) which won the Shazar and Toledano prizes; and Jews Among Muslims, 1750-1880 (3 vol., Open University Press, 2003-4). He is the founder and director of "The Jews of Islamic Countries – Archiving Project" (1999) and Historical Jewish Press website (2004).
