Nir Avieli is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and former Chair (2019 – 2021) of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev as well as the former president of the Israeli Anthropological Association (2016 – 2019). Professor Avieli's current research focuses on processes of social change in the contexts of food, tourism, gender, and consumerism. He recently published, Food and Power in Israel, (2018, University of California Press) and is currently working on an ethnographic study titled, "Food for the Body and Soul," on the vegan soul food of the African Hebrew Israelite Community and writing a forthcoming book, Food and Freedom: Culinary Redemption in the Israeli Periphery. Professor Avieli received his Ph.D. from Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2004).
